Nothing happened, so I knocked again. Nothing. So I started pacing, trying to think of a way to get out of this hole I was in. Then finally after a good bit of pacing and thinking I decided to knock a third time, but just before my fingers grasped the knocker, the door opened a little man with a bald head and a long beard with a lantern in his hand stepped out. I shielded my eyes, for by now the sun had gone down and it was pitch dark in the pit, so the sudden light was a bit shocking. We stared at each other in silence for a long while, until he spoke.
“Welcome.” said he, “We’d been wondering when you would arrive.”
“You’ve been expecting me?” said I.
“Why of course, lad! Now come along.”
And with that he turned and walked back through the door. I took a deep breath, hunched down, and followed him.
